DA and BDA Visioning Conference

We will host nine workshops over two months, all focused on visioning in DA and BDA:

Sometimes one of the hardest questions to answer in life is “What do I really want?” We keep ourselves so busy doing what we have to do that we don’t get around to asking ourselves what we want to do. And sometimes we don’t know how to differentiate between what we really want and what we think we should want.

— from DA's Visions pamphlet

Because we will be welcoming DA and BDA members to share real-world details of their businesses and lives, we must ask that all workshop participants meet the only requirement for DA and BDA membership:

an ongoing desire to stop incurring new unsecured debt, one day at a time

July 11 and 18, 2021 — Visioning in words (getting our vision onto paper and reading it aloud, as part of the process of asking Higher Power for what we want, while aligning our will and vision with the Higher Power's will and vision for us) — we will spend July 11th sharing our writings about personal visions and July 18th on business, income, earning, or employment vision writings

July 25 and August 1, 2021 — Visioning in numbers (creating vision spending plans for the lives we really, really want) — we will spend July 25th sharing our vision spending plans for our personal visions and August 1st on business, income, earning, or employment vision spending plans

August 8 and 15, 2021 — Visioning in pictures (really SEEING our visions and sharing them with others — maybe vision boards, maybe vision slide decks, maybe our own artwork — show and tell for us grownups in recovery from debting) — we will spend August 8th sharing imagery related to our personal visions and August 15th on business, income, earning, or employment visions and images

August 22 and 29, 2021 — Manifesting our visions through the DA and BDA program (ha! — did you think we were leaving out the DA and BDA principles and tools? — never!) — we will spend August 22nd sharing how we bring DA and BDA into our personal visions and August 29th on business, income, earning, or employment visions and manifestations

NOTE: Most participants will not be able to attend all workshops in the series. That's okay. However, registration includes all NINE interrelated events, and the more workshops you attend, the more you will get out of them.

How to register:

Please send a one-time contribution of $125 via https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bdaintergroup2 with a note that says: Visions

Please keep in mind that your $125 contribution will give you access to NINE two-hour interrelated workshops, creating one recovery event, spanning two months.

All funds received will be deposited into our Public Information fund — new outreach projects are currently in the works.

Please see our Treasury Plans and Reports for more financial details and reach out to bdaintergroup@gmail.com with questions.

NOTE: For newcomers to DA and BDA — we consider those in their first year of DA and BDA membership to be newcomers — who find the registration fees above beyond your resources, please feel welcome to send a one-time payment of $45. We want to support, encourage, and welcome you as you begin the process of claiming and maintaining your solvency and of leaping into your recovery from debting, both personally and in your business(es).

Here's the very broad, Steps-based overview we're pursuing in our event planning committee; more specific details for each weekend have been provided in the sections further below:

We are adopting a structure for the visioning mini-conference that follows the path of the 12 Steps:

  • In weeks two and three, the writing will be guided toward practice of the first three Steps: surrendering to the process and to our Higher Powers; coming to believe and overcoming the insanity of not asking for what we want; and making the decision to be solvent and in recovery, at least for the rest of the process, in this case the visioning process.

  • In weeks four and five, the vision spending plans will be guided toward practice of the next three Steps: being honest with ourselves about what we really want, not what we think we should want, but what we really want; sharing our plans with others and with Higher Power while receiving feedback and input; and becoming entirely ready to become the people who can achieve our visions.

  • In weeks six and seven, the visioning visuals will be guided toward  practice of the next three Steps: practicing humility as we ask the Higher Power for what we want, "the difference between a demand and a simple request is plain to anyone" (from the AA 12 and 12); letting go of ALL of our past, forgiving ourselves for missed opportunities in our lives so far, and letting go of any blame we feel toward others, focusing on today and the bright future ahead of us; and seeking alignment within ourselves and with our Higher Powers, changing our thoughts, actions, behaviors, and patterns so we can change as people and fulfill our own dreams.

  • In weeks eight and nine, the manifestation discussions and suggested actions will be guided toward practice of the next three Steps: digging deeper into who we are and who we need to become in order to bring our visions into reality, leaning into steady improvement and maintaining the growth we've already experienced; inviting our Higher Power into every nook and cranny of our lives, every element of our reality today and our visions for tomorrow; and staying to recover, maximizing our potential as solvent debtors and business owners through practicing some part of the DA and BDA program every day, to the best of our ability and availability.

Each weekend host group — workshop leader, moderator, and 3rd member review and support participant — has now defined their individual workshop plans:

March 6 and 7, 2021 — Visioning in Words

We will begin the DA and BDA Visioning Mini-Conference with a two-workshop Visioning in Words section kicking off a full month of visioning in our DA and BDA recovery.  During this weekend, we will write our visions for our lives and / or businesses. The work we do in weekend one will serve as the foundation for the following workshops in this series. Workshops will be two hours, plus up to an hour of tightly moderated fellowship. If you can stay for all three hours, please do!

On Saturday, March 6th, we will work together to invite Higher Power to guide our visioning — specifically through the principles of Steps 1, 2, and 3, which we can lightly adapt for this application of the Steps as resources for visioning:

  1. Our lives will likely remain unmanageable, or become unmanageable again, unless we create a vision that includes the things we want and are willing to work for.

  2. Having no vision is insanity, and the Higher Power is the only solution to the problem of no vision, or the creation of unattainable visions, or creating visions for things we don’t really want.

  3. Creating and pursuing a vision aligned with our Higher Powers’ will for us is the recovered approach to getting what we want.

We are not alone in creating our visions, and we will not be alone in pursuing or living our visions. Higher Power and our DA and BDA fellows will be there to help us every step of the way.

Our workshop leader will share some guidance and support as we practice Visioning in Words, and she will share her vision from the Vision Prompt 1 we asked you to prepare for today. Please see the downloadable handout including all three prompts. During the second hour of the workshop we will do one 10-minute writing session on Vision Prompt 2 and then registrants who want to will have an opportunity to share their written visions with our fellows.

At the end of Saturday’s workshop, the workshop leader will describe Vision Prompt 3 to prepare and have ready for Sunday’s session. Everyone who wants to can then stay on the video conference for another hour to continue discussing Visioning in Words.

On Sunday, March 7th, we will share our Visioning in Words writings on Vision Prompt 3 and discuss ways to clarify our visions, and to make them more precise, as we ready them for Visioning in Numbers.

During the first hour, the workshop leader and moderator will share their visions with the group, then the workshop leader will share the process she followed to create hers. After a brief period of the workshop leader and moderator sharing how feedback might be given, a full hour will be spent on sharing visions and receiving feedback and support from fellow participants.

As we close, the workshop leader will suggest next steps related to Visioning with Words and to further assist registrants as they prepare their visions for the next weekend’s workshops on Visioning in Numbers.

Everyone who wants to can then stay on the video conference for another hour to continue discussing both Visioning in Words and preparation for next weekend’s workshops, Visioning in Numbers.

March 13 and 14, 2021 — Visioning in Numbers (revised)

During this second weekend, we will build on the personal writing our registrants have done in Visioning in Words and help everyone prepare for moving on to Visioning in Pictures. Workshops will be two hours, plus up to an hour of tightly moderated fellowship. If you can stay for all three hours, please do!

On Saturday, March 13th, we will work together to let go of our unsuccessful obstacles to asking for and receiving our visions, both in program and out, through the principles of DA’s 4th and 5th Steps: Being honest with ourselves, then being honest with others and with our Higher Powers. Our workshop leader will share an ideal / fantasy spending plan that DID NOT WORK, although it was created years into his DA recovery but only months into his current solvency. Then he’ll share what has happened to his visioning processes several years into solvency and with the addition of BDA to his DA recovery, which is ideal for him at this time

Next will be 20 minutes of Q&A, then 10 minutes of sharing by our moderator on his visioning experiences pre-BDA. Following a brief period of focused prayer and meditation. Most of the second hour will be spent on participant sharing by registrants, who will each have up to three minutes to share on the Steps-based (4, 5, and 6) topic of: “The obstacles and liabilities that interfere with me asking for and receiving what I want, and how I’m using the program to overcome them.”

At the end of Saturday’s workshop, the workshop leader will ask everyone to do some Visioning in Numbers overnight. The suggested assignment is to pick one thing (or service) that you really, really want; to research the costs of obtaining and maintaining that thing (or service); to develop a vision spending plan for that much-wanted thing (or service); and to bring your vision and early vision spending plan to share with the workshop group. (Examples: a vehicle upgrade; a major trip; a major purchase, such as a boat or luxury gadget; a creative or business project; a debt-free degree; the staff and paid support you not only need but also the help you want; a house purchase or remodel.)  Everyone who wants to can then stay on the meeting for another hour to continue discussing Visioning in Numbers AND the bridge from the previous weekend’s workshops on Visioning in Words.

On Sunday, March 14th, we will shift our focus to visions for our futures, this time through the principle of DA’s 6th Step: Accepting our pasts and getting ready for change. Our workshop leader will briefly share how he uses his DA and BDA recovery to vision today, including visioning on a cash basis, followed by 10 minutes for Q&A. Then our moderator will share a vision for something he really, really wants. Our workshop leader will provide one-minute support and encouragement as an example for participants.

Next will be 70 minutes of vision sharing, including early numbers, by at least eight participants who did their homework the night before and have brought a Vision in Numbers. Each visioner will have up to three minutes to share their visioning spending plan on screen, sharing their visions and their passion for them. Each will then receive up to five minutes of experience, strength, hope, encouragement, and support from fellow workshop participants.

At the end of Sunday’s workshop, the workshop leader will suggest next steps related to Visioning in Numbers and ask everyone to prepare for the following Saturday’s workshop on Visioning in Pictures. Everyone who wants to can then stay on the meeting for another hour to continue discussing both Visioning in Numbers AND Visioning in Pictures.

March 20 and 21, 2021 — Visioning in Pictures

During this third weekend, we will build on the Visioning in Words and Visioning in Numbers our registrants have done so far and help everyone prepare for moving on to manifestation of their visions. Workshops will be two hours, plus an hour of continued connection for those who wish to extend their participation. If you can stay for all three hours, please do!

On Saturday, March 20th, we will work together to bring humility into our visioning and the requests we make of our Higher Power, and then focus on letting our recovery guide our image selections into the lives we want, rather than away from the lives we don’t want.

That is, we will practice the principles of DA’s 7th and 8th Steps: Bringing humility into everything we do, especially when relating to our Higher Powers, and letting go of our pasts.

“Past performance is not indicative of future results.” This quote is generally used to say things can go bad quickly. In our world, it’s the opposite. In solvency and recovery, in the hands of our Higher Powers, anything is possible. But not if we’re trapped in either our arrogance or our pasts.

Most of the first hour will be spent on sharing from our workshop leader and moderator and answering participant questions. Most of the second hour will be spent on creation of vision boards, vision slide decks, visioning pin boards online, or personal artwork.

As we close, our workshop leader will lead us in picturing our lives without our shortcomings and after our amends have been made. Everyone will be welcome to stay and continue visioning together for as long as they’d like.

On Sunday, March 21st, we will again focus on our visions for our futures, on what we do want, this time through the principle of DA’s 9th Step: Making the necessary changes within ourselves to become the people who feel worthy of the lives we want and receptive as opportunities for manifestation of our visions appear.

This second day of Visioning in Pictures will begin with 10 minutes of sharing from our moderator on visioning and taking the actions to achieve his visions as DA and BDA 9th Step amends to himself. The next 20 minutes will be spent on Q&A with our workshop leader.

The remaining 90 minutes will be spent on sharing of visions in pictures by up to seven participants, for five minutes each, who will each immediately receive up to five minutes of encouragement and support from fellow participants in 1-minute timed increments.

After the workshop closes, everyone who wants to can then stay on the meeting for as long as they’d like to continue sharing their Visioning in Pictures.

March 27 and 28, 2021 — Manifesting Our Visions Through the DA and BDA Program

During this fourth (and final) weekend, we will build on the visioning in words, numbers, and pictures our registrants have done so far and help everyone lean into manifestation of their visions through the DA and BDA program. Workshops will be two hours, plus an hour of continued connection for those who wish to extend their participation. If you can stay for all three hours, please do!

On Saturday, March 27th, we will work together to apply Steps 10 and 11 to our visions and their manifestation. In other words, we continue to look at the obstacles we, ourselves, put in the way of living the lives we want, and begin to look at how we relate ourselves and our visions to our Higher Powers through conscious, consistent contact.

We’ll begin by taking a look at the fears we still carry into our lives and visions each day, even after taking all 12 Steps. We’ll look at progress not perfection, combined with solvency and action, as the path to sanity and manifestation of our visions. “For by this time sanity will have returned.” (From the 10th Step promises in the AA Big Book)

Next we will take a look at how we maintain conscious contact with our Higher Powers as a natural next Step to taking our daily inventories. We’ll meditate and share on how and what we take to our Higher Powers about our visions.

As we close, our moderator will set us up for turning our visioning process into a 12th Step activity as we prepare for our last day in the mini-conference. Everyone will be welcome to stay and continue sharing together for as long as they’d like.

On Sunday, March 28th, we will once again focus on our visions for our futures, on what we do want, this time through the principle of DA’s 12th Step: Turning our visions and their manifestations into messages of experience, strength, and hope, and then carrying those messages to others as we practice our DA and BDA program, perhaps especially the spiritual awakenings we’ve had as a result of the 12 Steps.

This second day of Manifesting Our Visions will be focused on gratitude.

First, we’ll look at the messages underlying our visions, the message for us and the message for others. What are these messages and how are we carrying them? We’ll also want to ask ourselves: “Are my visions expressions of the spiritual awakening I’ve had through the 12 Steps? Or are they holdovers from my pre-BDA years of selfishness and self-centeredness?"

Finally, as we approach the end of this month-long event, we’ll have thirty minutes in which participants can make 90-second gratitude offerings to the group, nothing too small or large — a brief gratitude list, a poem or song, a drawing or photograph, a prayer of gratitude to our Higher Power, or something completely different.

After the workshop closes, everyone who wants to can then stay on the meeting for as long as they’d like to continue sharing and fellowshipping.
